Bill wipes millions of New Yorkers’ criminal records

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Millions of New Yorkers are now free of their criminal records.

That’s thanks to the Clean Slate Act that took effect over the weekend.

State criminal records are now sealed under certain background checks.

State misdemeanors are sealed for three years after sentencing or release and after 8 years for felonies.

Some serious felonies including sex crimes and murder stay public.
