Burlington tries again for another gun ban in bars

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington officials are pursuing another charter change to try to ban guns from bars in the Queen City.

The City Council this week voted to put the measure on the Town Meeting Day ballot. It’s the exact same question Burlington voters approved a decade ago but then stalled in the Legislature.

The renewed effort comes in the wake of a homicide outside a Church Street bar this summer and ongoing gun violence.

“There’s an aspect of local control and local need that we have, so they should not by any stretch of the imagination or reasonability, stop this. There’s no good reason to allow guns in bars,” said City Councilor Gene Bergman, P-Ward 2.

Governor Phil Scott has said he does not support piecemeal gun legislation in the state and others have questioned how a ban on guns in bars would be enforced.
