Barre Town ramps up police recruitment incentives

BARRE TOWN, Vt. (WCAX) – With job fairs and advertising not working, Barre Town is turning to cash to help find new police recruits.

Town officials have signed off on an incentive program that pays town employees for successful referrals. It comes as the small department of only eight officers — including the chief — has tried to fill two open positions.

Town Manager Chris Violette hopes his staff can help find the right people for the job. “A lot of times people, employees — if they are recommending somebody — sometimes the quality tends to be a little bit better and the chances are that they may stay longer, too,” he said.

New cops are also eligible for up to $5,000 in incentives.
