Vermont voters set new turnout record

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermonters set a new record for voter turnout in Tuesday’s presidential election.

Election officials are still finalizing the numbers but they say over 372,000 Vermonters cast ballots on Tuesday. Compare that to 2020 when just shy of 371,000 Vermonters made their voices heard.

Vt. Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas says 4,000 voters registered on Election Day, too. She says the nature of this year’s election was the factor. “A presidential election year tends to bring out more turnout than off-cycle years but I think this year there was a high amount of interest in House and Senate races as well,” she said.

Over 230,000 Vermonters voted early or absentee through the mail.

Leaders from Vermont’s three major parties will officially certify the election results on Tuesday.
