New York launches domestic violence prevention initiative

ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – Empire State professionals are learning how to spot and help victims of domestic violence.

It’s part of an initiative from New York Governor Kathy Hochul to prevent intimate partner abuse.

Members of the legal system, social services staff, and other professionals attended the meetings.

The event teaches how to assess danger in DV cases and how to respond in a trauma-informed and culturally responsive way.

“The state can look at our response to domestic violence homicide and really understand how we can predict domestic violence homicide and how as a community and a state, if we work together we can reduce the amount of domestic violence homicide,” said Kelli Owens of NYS Office for Prevention of Domestic Violence.

Over 250 people attended the summit.

Earlier this month, Governor Kathy Hochul invested $35 million to enhance law enforcement response.
