BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Residents in the southeast are bracing for impact as yet another hurricane heads their way – but Vermonters are on their way to help.
Hurricane Milton was a category 5 storm weakening overnight into a category 4 as it moved towards the western coast of Florida, expected to make landfall Wednesday or Thursday.
Already, Floridians are heeding warnings from officials and evacuating. At least nine counties are under mandatory evacuation orders with Tampa’s airport expected to cease operations today.
Those planning to wait it out are in line for hours to fill sandbags and scrambling to buy gas and supplies where some shelves are already empty.
Over 2,000 Red Cross volunteers are already working to provide food, water, and shelter to hurricane victims.
Our Sophia Thomas spoke to Vermonter Debra Boyce, who is heading down to Georgia with the Red Cross to lend a hand.
