Hinesburg projects aimed at pedestrian safety

HINESBURG, Vt. (WCAX) – Hinesburg is working on ways to make the village more pedestrian-friendly.

The town received two grants to update its crosswalks and sidewalks in front of the United Church and the Hinesburg Community School on Route 116. They will be installing flashing crosswalk signs and raising some sidewalks to mitigate stormwater and drainage.

The town’s Alex Weinhagen says the projects cost about a million dollars and are part of their “smart growth” vision. “You can’t have more housing, more business, more vitality if you don’t have safe pedestrian infrastructure like sidewalks and crosswalks. There are children that are walking around in our village as well. Lots of folks have encouraged us to make improvements over time,” Weinhagen said.

The town is hoping to break ground on some of the work as early as next year
