Vermont search and rescue crews continue to assist in aftermath of Helene

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont search and rescue teams continue to pitch into the disaster relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

The team of 14 rescued 20 people and dozens of pets in Florida in the past week since the storm made landfall.

There are now 20 Vermonters working in Asheville, North Carolina. Crews describe difficult conditions with many roads wiped out. There’s no water, gasoline, electricity, landlines, or internet.

Vermont Public Safety Commissioner Jennifer Morrison says Vermont teams are helping the same people who pitched in during our own catastrophic flooding. “The area that our team is working is home to one of the North Carolina swift water rescue teams that responded to Vermont in 2023 and made many rescues in the Lamoille County area. It was a team from Buncombe County that was stationed at the Cambridge Fire Department,” she said.

The team is expected to stay in the area for at least another week.
