Biden approves Vt. disaster declaration for late-July storm

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – President Biden has approved the latest major disaster declaration for late-July storms that caused flooding havoc in Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans Counties.

The storm, the second to devastate some communities for the second time in July, caused an estimated $3.7 million in public infrastructure damage and destroyed or damaged about 85 homes. The declaration clears the way for both public and individual assistance grants.

Residents in Addison, Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Lamoille, Orleans, and Washington Counties were already eligible for assistance related to the flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl on July 9 through July 11.

“This is our third disaster declaration in just over a month and seventh in 14 months,” Governor Phil Scott said in a statement. “This disaster declaration will bring much-needed financial resources to towns and individuals as they continue to recover from the impacts of this storm.”

To apply for IA funds, impacted Vermonters in the eligible counties should register at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362. Even if you have previously reported damage to 2-1-1, you must register with and apply to FEMA.
