Mount Washington Observatory sees 1st measurable snow of the season

GORHAM, N.H. (WCAX) – Researchers at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire reported the first measurable snowfall of the season there this week.

Photos they posted on social media show the icy scene.

It was only 0.1 inches, but it came nearly a month earlier than last year’s first measurable snow, which was on Oct. 8.

The observatory says the summit was below freezing for nearly 36 hours and researchers at the top worked overnight to make sure the heater on the wind vane kept instruments warm enough to record the weather.

Mount Washington is the Northeast’s highest mountain, at 6,288 feet, and is known for its extreme weather conditions. The observatory is at the summit.
