Governor raises red flags about education spending

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Scott administration is raising red flags about school spending next year and another spike in property taxes.

In a letter this week to school districts first reported by Seven Days, Gov. Phil Scott said he wanted to work with school districts to contain spending and prevent school budgets from failing.

The governor points to $69 million in one-time funds used to buy down taxes and increases in health care costs mean property taxes could rise 7% even if school spending stays flat.

We’ll dive deeper into Scott’s letter this week and what school budgets could look like next year.
