HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) – The union that represents the Dartmouth men’s basketball team has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the school.
The union says Dartmouth’s refusal to bargain in good faith with them violates both labor laws and the school’s code of ethics.
In a statement, Local 560 President Chris Peck said, in part, “It is past time for Dartmouth administration to avoid the looming financial and legal liabilities by grasping this opportunity to show leadership, as the players have, and live up to its own rhetoric regarding the importance of both community and dialogue.”
In response, Dartmouth issued a statement that said they maintain it was an extraordinary mistake for the National Labor Relations Board to find the student-athletes were employees. And said of the school’s choice to not bargain with the union, “It is an unprecedented step in Dartmouth’s long history of labor negotiations, but it is the only lever we can engage to ensure this matter is reviewed by a federal court.”
