MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A new program aims to keep those on the autism spectrum safe during interactions with law enforcement.
The Blue Envelope Program alerts police officers during routine traffic stops that a driver has autism. It provides printed instructions to guide the officer on adapting their approach.
The Vermont DMV worked with the UVM Autism Collaborative to develop the program. DMV officials say the goal of the program is to promote positive interactions and reduce anxiety during traffic stops.
