One Year Later: The challenges of covering a disaster in real-time

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – On the one-year anniversary of catastrophic flooding in Vermont, we’re taking a look back at how it all unfolded and the challenges our news and weather crews faced covering the disaster.

While we tried to get as much information as possible in real-time as the floodwaters rose, some members of our team ended up getting trapped in it. Reporter Lucy Caile was documenting road closures and rising water levels when she got stuck on Interstate 89 as it was shut down.

It wasn’t just the news crews, our meteorologists were tasked with forecasting what was to come and helping to keep Vermonters safe. Meteorologist Jess Langlois reflected on what it was like leading up to and during the flooding disaster.
