Majority of toxic firefighting foam spilled during malfunction now collected

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Officials say most of the toxic firefighting foam spilled during a malfunction at the National Guard Aviation Facility in South Burlington has now been collected.

We first told you on Friday about the firefighting foam leak at the facility.

Officials say 800 gallons of the foam was released due to a system malfunction.

Now, we are told an estimated 650 gallons of the foam was collected before going into the drainage system. That means about 150 gallons will make its way to the city’s wastewater treatment facility. Officials there told us there shouldn’t be any concern for drinking water.

The Guard says an investigation will begin on what caused the leak when the facility is safe to enter which they say will be later this week.
