Forest officials advise campers to beware of bears

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Reports of human encounters with bears in the national forest and at campgrounds are trending up.

Officials say to avoid a run-in with a black bear, keep a clean campsite, and be sure to properly store all food and other scented items like toothpaste, pet food, and food wrappers.

Bear-proof canisters are available for loan at ranger stations.

Officials also advise not to sleep in clothes you cooked or handled game in.

Lastly, be sure to hang your food bag at least 12 feet off the ground and 6 feet out from a tree limb when in the backcountry.
