WILMINGTON, N.Y. (WCAX) – New rules for short-term rental units have been approved in Wilmington, New York.
Officials in the town, which lies just outside Lake Placid, say the new regulations cap short-term rentals at 150 units. That’s roughly 20% of the area’s available housing stock.
Unit owners of rentals seeking to surpass the cap will have to apply through the town and go through a public hearing.
Wilmington Town Supervisor Favor Smith says the new rules will help address ongoing concerns over housing in the area.
“I think it gives us a chance to look at perhaps more creative ways of altering of the zoning code, through a permitting, through a use process with the planning board,” Smith said.
Smith says there are currently 145 short-term rentals in the area.
