WAITSFIELD, Vt. (WCAX) – A pair of bears were caught on camera making themselves at home in a Vermont backyard.
Waitsfield resident Noah Dweck took the video when he came across two young bears in his yard. One gently rocked and relaxed in the family’s hammock as the other kept watch.
Dweck said he heard the hammock jingling but when he realized there was no wind, he immediately knew it was a bear.
“Yeah, it was definitely like you probably could think of the conversation in the woods above the hammock was, ‘Hey, come check this out. I want to show you something.’ And the other one was just curiously sitting there watching him, you know, get in and see what was going on. And when I came out, they both kind of just looked at me and say, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ There was no… they weren’t scared. They weren’t trying to run away until I yelled at them,” Dweck said.
Though the video is amusing, Vermont Fish and Wildlife officials say this bear behavior is a bad sign. They say bears that become too comfortable with people will put themselves– and Vermonters– at risk. They say the best thing you can do is to make sure bears have no reason to come looking around your home for food and to use loud noises to scare them off.
