Barre man drowns in Mad River swimming hole

MORETOWN, Vt. (WCAX) – State police are investigating after an apparent drowning in the Mad River in Moretown.

Troopers say they responded to the Big Rock swimming hole just before 5:30 p.m. after getting reports of a drowning man.

The man was identified as 34-year-old Anthony Goddard of Barre. Witnesses say Goddard was trying to swim across the river with his young daughter on his back when he began to struggle. He went under the water and did not come back up.

Several people got into the water and were able to bring the child to shore safely, but couldn’t find Goddard.

When troopers arrived they were able to get Goddard to shore and began administering life-saving measures, but it was too late, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured and police say at this point there are no signs of foul play.
