BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A big honor Wednesday for a Burlington teacher.
C.P. Smith Elementary School gave Penne Wheeler the Golden Apple Award. The special ed teacher is retiring after almost 40 years of teaching at the school.
Len Phelan, the school’s principal said Wheeler not only made school more accessible to students but helped them overcome some social challenges and learn life skills. “I see a highlight every day with Mrs. Wheeler as she works with individual students one-on-one or in small groups and treats them with compassion and provides an endless well of encouragement for them,” Phelan said.
He said Wheeler will be missed when she retires at the end of the school year.
