WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCAX) – Today was the first day of the 96th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, and Vermont’s champion from Kirby, 12-year-old Phoenix Newell, took the stage.
Spellbound hopefuls and their families traveled from all across the country hoping to become the nation’s next spell-lebrity.
Newell won the Vermont Principal’s Association spelling bee back in March, competing against 60 students from across the state to represent Vermont in D.C.
While Newell did not make it to the next round, she said in an interview before the competition, that she enjoyed the experience.
Well, the activities, I think, are pretty cool. I am glad that it’s not just that competition. They have, like, activities and challenges,” said Newell.
Congrats to Phoenix for making it to the competition!
