HARTFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – The town of Hartford is working on a banner policy in response to a request by a group wanting to honor veterans.
The group approached the town’s selectboard several months ago requesting “Hometown Heroes” banners be hung around town as part of a national trend recognizing first responders and veterans.
However, after a couple of heated meetings, the town decided that it must first adopt a banner policy so that all future requests get the same consideration.
“We hadn’t had a banner policy. We don’t want to get in the position where we are like, yeah, sure hang some banners and eventually we say, you know, it’s time to take them down. There’s nothing we can really point to saying that or to have restriction on where they would be things, like that,” said Hartford Selectboard Chair Michael Hoyt.
The town will finalize its banner policy June 4th. Any group wanting to hang banners would still need selectboard approval.
The Hometown Heroes banners will likely not be up for several more months.
