Rutland County public defender nominated to serve on federal bench

WASHINGTON WCAX) – A Rutland public defender has been nominated by President Joe Biden to be the next federal district court judge in Vermont.

Mary Lay Lanthier of Orwell was recommended to the White House by Vermont Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch, who both applauded Thursday’s announcement.

Lanthier has served in the Rutland County Public Defender’s Office since 2007 and until last year also taught at Vermont Law School.

If confirmed by the Senate, she will fill the seat of Judge Geoffrey Crawford, who is moving to senior status.
