PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – About 2,300 flags were placed at veterans’ gravestones in the North Country ahead of this Memorial Day, with help from some kids in the region.
The commander of Clinton County’s American Legion says this is the second year they’ve placed American flags in cemeteries. He says they had the help of the Civil Air Patrol, 4-H and the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York.
Flags were placed at the old base, St. Peters, Riverside and St. Johns cemeteries.
Girl Scout Amelia Haag says she believes it’s important to remember the North Country men and women who served.
“All of these people they risked their lives to save this country and it is just, it is just a good way to remember them. It’s a good thing to do,” Haag said.
The commander of the American Legion says he hopes to have more youth involvement going forward to keep the tradition going for the next generation.
