Another Vermont Democrat announces plans to leave Statehouse

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont Statehouse continues to lose familiar faces. Now, Bennington Democratic Sen. Brian Campion says he will not run for reelection.

Campion announced the decision on Monday. He was elected to the Vermont Senate in 2014 and has served as chair of the Senate Education Committee since 2021.

Campion is now the fifth Democratic senator in recent weeks to bow out of another term. Sen. Jane Kitchel of Caledonia County, Northeast Kingdom Sen. Bobby Starr, Windsor County Sen. Dick McCormack and Grand Isle County Sen. Dick Mazza have all announced plans to step down.

After this election cycle, half of the 30-member Senate will have turned over in the last four years.
