BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Postmaster General Louis Dejoy has paused plans to consolidate dozens of USPS processing facilities until at least January 1, 2025.
The proposed change threatened to move mail sorting operations from Vermont’s Essex Junction and White River Junction sorting hubs to Connecticut.
Vermont Senator Peter Welch says the consolidation would have slowed mail operations across Vermont and was strongly opposed by USPS customers and workers alike.
Critics say the network overhaul needed to be paused until after the upcoming presidential election, in which millions of Americans will be voting by mail.
