Sen. Welch calls for independent tech agency to protect data

WASHINGTON (WCAX) – Vermont Senator Peter Welch is calling for the creation of an independent agency to protect small business and consumer data.

During a meeting last week of the Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, Welch pushed for creating the new federal agency through the Digital Platform Commission Act to help address cyber security concerns.

“We can’t keep up with all the changes and all the methodologies by which there is hacking. I think the time has come where we actually need an agency – a digital commission — much like say the FTC or the FCC, that is properly staffed, properly resourced, and has the capacity to keep up,” Welch said.

At the hearing, Welch also asked experts about how to help people and small businesses use affordable cybersecurity measures to keep their data safe.
