Rutland expo aims to attract young people to careers in health care

RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – An expo taking place in Rutland on Wednesday is aimed at attracting young people to careers in health care.

The Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year but it’s the first time they’ve ever hosted the one-day expo.

Officials say their goal is to create experiences for high school and college students exploring health careers or to help give an extra push to those trying to break into the medical field.

Students Wednesday got to explore interactive exhibits and interact with representatives from 20 different health-related fields.

“When we introduce students to health careers, we’re looking at them entering the workforce in four, six, eight years from now. So, those are the careers we’re focused on, while we also have a more urgent crisis for current openings. So, the students that are of the right age, they can go into entry-level careers, so we connect them with employers,” said AHEC’s Jennifer Scott.

AHEC partnered with area hospitals in putting together the event.

It runs until 7 p.m. at the Rutland Recreation & Community Center.
