BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Building continues on Burlington’s tallest development. The CityPlace project will soon bring hundreds of housing units and hotel rooms to the Queen City.
With the upward construction of CityPlace’s South Building largely completed, there’s a lot of work remaining before next year’s planned completion.
“There’s five floors of hotel rooms and then there’s four floors of apartments above it. So, there’s 50-something apartments, 150 hotel rooms,” said Dave Farrington, one of the developers on the project.
Workers are busy outside and inside the building installing around 600 windows and putting up walls for the residential units and the units for the future AC Hotel by Marriott.
Masons are one of the many members of the crew working on the project. They are installing nearly 4,000 limestone blocks to the outside facade. “Each stone is laid down in a bed of mortar and is tied back to the building with some stainless steel anchors, so they’re heavy,” said Tony Ziter with Ziter Masonry. He says new tools make it easier on his crew, helping to save their bodies from the stress of lifting the 130-pound stones. “This machine picks them up for us, but it also thinks along with the mason, so once the weight is off, they can guide the stone in the place and simply set it in.”
Farrington says morale is high and that they are shooting for an early 2025 completion date. He says future retailers are also coming in to focus. “We’ve talked with a lot of local people, which is really good. We haven’t made any decisions yet. We don’t have any firm proposals or offers or anything, but it seems like there’s a good buzz about it,” he said.
Construction on the North Building — with 140 hotel rooms and 370 apartments, including affordable units — is expected to be complete by the end of 2026. Pine and Bank Streets will also be finished by then.
