Lt. Gov. Zuckerman to seek reelection

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Lt. Governor David Zuckerman has announced he is running for reelection.

Zuckerman Thursday announced he is seeking his fourth term for the state’s second-highest office. The Hinesburg farmer was elected to the post in 2022 after previously serving in the role from 2017 to 2020, when he lost a bid to unseat Gov. Phil Scott. The Progressive Democrat has also served a number of terms in the Vermont House and Senate.

Zuckerman says he plans to use his campaign as an opportunity to discuss key issues with people impacted by the state’s most difficult challenges. “This is a critical moment for our state. Vermont is becoming less affordable for working families. We face a housing crisis, a climate emergency, and rising regressive property taxes that are crushing working class people. As Vermonters suffer, our healthcare system costs continue to rise at unsustainable rates. In the face of continued threats to our democracy, we must come together,” Zuckerman said in a statement.

With neither Sen. Bernie Sanders nor Gov. Phil Scott having yet announced their reelection plans, Zuckerman was among a group of ambitious Vermont politicians including Congresswoman Becca Balint and Treasurer Mike Pieciak, thought to be waiting in the wings to run for higher office.

Vermont’s lieutenant governor has three primary tasks, including serving as governor when the chief executive is away or unable to serve, presiding over the Senate, and casting tie-breaking votes. Zuckerman’s annual salary is $88,712.
