PLATTSBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) – 12 students from the welding program at Clinton Community College are eager and ready to join the workforce after graduating this month.
The students were part of the spring semester’s class at the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing or IAM.
The three-week course consisted of 40 hours of in-class time and 80 hours of hands-on training at no cost to the students.
In the North Country, businesses like Alstom, which makes subway cars, say they need more than a handful of welders for upcoming contracts.
One graduate says the program’s financial assistance is what made her pursue the weeks-long course. “It really pushed me to apply for the program, knowing I wasn’t going to go into debt, while acquiring a new skill,” said graduate Sienna Brooks.
Students were also invited to tour and meet with hiring professionals at Alstom following their graduation.
