Made in Vermont: EcoSmart Shades by Gordon’s Window Decor

WILLISTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Tucked on a quiet road in Williston, Gordon’s Window Decor is where quality window coverings come to life.

“If you have a bathroom window, there’s a great product for that. If you have an entire dorm that needs shades, there’s a great product for that,” says Kelly Clements, president of Gordon’s Window Decor. Her dad started the company back in 1986 out of their basement in Essex, and it’s safe to say things have changed since then. But, their mission hasn’t.

“He saw a need for window coverings that were energy efficient because there was an overuse of aluminum miniblinds, which are really, really bad for the environment,” Clements explains.

In 1988, they started focusing more on eco-friendly window coverings. And, in 2000, they launched their EcoSmart line of roller and cellular shades.

“When we think about a product that is EcoSmart, i.e. good for the environment, we think about it in a couple of ways,” says Clements. First, Gordon’s aims to keep these coverings out of the landfill. Clements claims there are similar products on the market, but they come with a fraction of the lifetime.

“We’re pulling shades out of universities that we installed in 2000, 2001. Our shades go for 20 years,” she says. Citing the science behind their energy-efficient window coverings, Clements says EcoSmart shades come with a fraction of the heating and cooling costs.

“It’s less expensive to heat a home, less expensive to cool a home. A home is just more comfortable when you have an EcoSmart insulating cellular shade,” she says.

Whether customers are buying e-commerce from around the world, custom commercial shades for businesses or schools, or are working on a perfect solution for their home with a Gordon’s designer, all EcoSmart shades are made in their Williston facility.

“We get big pallets of raw material that we break down and break down until it becomes a shade that’s built to a 16th of an inch for a specific window,” Clements explains. She also adds that a special product requires a special team to make it, whether they’re cutting the metal hardware, or the fabric itself.

“They’re not easy products to put together. And so the expertise that this team brings to the products is why they’re lasting for 20 years,” she says.

No shady business here, a proven track record of customer service is what’s kept Gordon’s in the game for almost 40 years. And, it allows Clements to make the confident claim, “We build a really excellent product.”
