Annual Day of Caring kicks off in Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, NY. (WCAX) – The annual Day of Caring kicked off in Plattsburgh Saturday with several volunteer opportunities.

Organizers hosted a park clean up held at Camp Tapawingo – the space is used to host Girl Scout events and non profit summer camps.

The park clean up helped to get the area ready for the upcoming programs.

A Girl Scout who volunteered said it’s not her first time lending a helping hand, and she wants to continue volunteering to help out her community.

”I volunteer to help the environment and we also volunteer to clean up any trash and help the lawnmower lawn all of this area.” Girl Scout Antoinette Hamburger said.

Volunteers from Project Help at SUNY Plattsburgh also helped the area ready for camp.

Also across the North Country – volunteers made strides to reduce food insecurity.

The United Way of the Adirondack Region organized three drop off locations in Plattsburgh, Elizabethtown, and Malone to donate items.

Town Supervisor Michael Cashman spoke on the importance of having these drives.

“As we continue to do food drives I think many people often think about these things around the holidays in particular but food insecurity is something that occurs every single day of the year,” Cashman said.

Along with non perishable food items, the drive collected personal care items and toiletries.
