Vt. Criminal Justice Council approves changes to fair and impartial policy

PITTSFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont Criminal Justice Council has approved an updated fair and impartial policing policy, the first substantial changes since 2018.

For more than a year and a half, the council worked with advocacy groups like Migrant Justice over when Vermont law enforcement should interact with federal authorities when it comes to immigration and citizenship status.

Under the new changes, individual police agencies need to update their policies based on the framework set by the council. Officials will review every agency’s policy within the next six months.
