National Weather Service warns of fire risk

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The National Weather Service is warning of fire weather concerns for Monday and Tuesday.

They say grass and leaf litter across Vermont will dry out on Monday. That, combined with low relative humidity and expected gusty weather, could lead to fires getting out of hand quickly.

The weather service says this time of year can be particularly dangerous with a lack of new growth in the springtime and low humidity.

“Any fires that to start you know, whether it be manmade or any other way, could rapidly grow. And so we’re just kind of putting out a Public Information Statement pretty much saying that, ‘Hey, just beware, you know, not a good day to burn if you’re planning to burn,’” said Matthew Clay, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Burlington.

The NWS says Tuesday could be even windier and people should hold off on any burning.
