Police searching for suspect in Vt. sexual assault cases

BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Police are searching for a man accused in two sexual assault cases in Vermont.

Vermont State Police say an arrest warrant has been issued for James Gathright Jr., 56, of the Rutland and Bennington areas.

They say it stems from two incidents last September in Bennington when police say first he sexually assaulted a woman on Northside Drive and then days later assaulted a juvenile on the rail trail near Northside Drive.

Gathright is described as a Black man, about 5′8″ and 170 lbs. with brown hair. His last known whereabouts were in Bennington around November 2023

Anyone with information on Gathright’s whereabouts is asked to call their local police or the state police in Shaftsbury at 802-442-5421. You can also submit an anonymous tip online.
