PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Today is the presidential primary in New York, and it was a slow day at the polls.
Clinton County’s Democratic and Republican election commissioners say they expect turnout to be around 10%, a far cry from 2020′s turnout of 55%. They say that’s because both parties’ candidates– President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump– have already secured enough delegates for their nominations.
“We are getting phone calls, ‘What is this election even for today?’ Because they already feel like it’s done, even though New York State does have to go through this election to make it official in New York State, it’s already been decided,” said Brandi Lloyd, the Clinton County deputy Democratic election commissioner.
Both commissioners say they would be in favor of moving up the state’s presidential primary to Super Tuesday to increase voter turnout.
New York’s next primary is on June 25 for state and local elections.
