City faces backlash over Rutland parking problems

RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – The city of Rutland is facing some backlash over parking problems.

Some residents and visitors are upset over price increases and new methods of payment for city parking.

Parking was increased to a $1.50 an hour in certain spots last June.

At a recent committee meeting, downtown business owners said customers are complaining about the changes.

One of the main issues is the reliability of certain kiosks used for parking instead of meters.

“For the past however many years we’ve had the parking kiosks, they’ve never worked right. One won’t take change, the next won’t take a credit card. Sometimes they’re just broken altogether. People have to walk around the street trying to find a kiosk that works,” said Will Notte, the manager of Phoenix Books in Rutland.

“We’re looking at some interesting ways of forgiving parking tickets, whether that’s a one-time forgiveness or doing something like Woodstock’s doing, which is if you bring in a receipt for the value of the ticket or higher, we can essentially validate that ticket,” Rutland Mayor Mike Doenges said.

The Rutland City Board of Aldermen also introduced plans to increase parking fines from 15 to 30 dollars.
