Poultney group raising funds to replace monument of Civil War soldier

POULTNEY, Vt. (WCAX) – A Rutland County nonprofit is looking to rebuild a 160-year-old monument honoring a local Civil War soldier.

A monument dedicated to former Poultney resident Captain Samuel Darrah is located at the Old Poultney Cemetery on Beaman Street. Darrah died at the Battle of Brandy Station in Cold Harbor, Virginia.

Officials with The Poultney Cemetery Association say his monument needs to be completely replaced having deteriorated throughout the years. “Marble doesn’t hold up as well as granite monuments do. This one had fallen over in the early 2000s and we researched for a while trying to find alternate sources to get it replaced and it wasn’t possible,” said the association’s Janice Edwards. “Someone from Virginia, two Civil War historians reached out and if we need some assistance from them on other avenues — they’ll be willing to help us, too.”

The group is seeking $15,000 in the form of grants and community support. Contact the association if you can help: (802)-779-5534.
