WASHINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Sap is flowing and Vermont Governor Phil Scott is ringing in Vermont’s sugaring season with his annual first tapping.
This year’s event will be at Buck Family Maple in Washington, Vermont. The governor will be joined by Agriculture Secretary Anson Tebbetts and a representative from the Vermont Sugar Makers Association.
2023 saw Vermont leading maple syrup production nationwide, a first-place seat the state has maintained since 1926. Last year saw variable weather that had production down by about 20% with 2.05 million gallons, down from the record 2.55 million in 2022.
Maple is Vermont’s second leading agriculture crop behind milk.
