Community members hold vigil for ‘Byrdman’

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Community members gathered in Burlington’s Old North End Wednesday evening to pay tribute to community staple – Byrd Allen – also known as Byrdman.

He was the victim of a fatal hit and run crash earlier this month, involving a suspected impaired driver.

Byrdman could be found pushing decorated carts around Burlington and singing.

The person who organized tonight’s vigil says he’d known Byrdman for 15 years before his passing, and he wanted to give the community the chance to reflect on his impact.

“I’m organizing this because he was a kind man, and I was like his friend, and I can’t explain what he’s done for me,” Burlington resident Mike Jermone said.

People held candles, shared their favorite memories of Byrdman, and had a moment of silence.

Many said they want his carts to remain in the Old North End as a permanent memorial for him.
