MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont lawmakers are working on a bill to prohibit pet stores and puppy mills from selling certain animals in Vermont.
House Bill 567 would ban pet stores from selling dogs, cats, and wolf hybrids.
Rep. Emilie Krasnow, D-South Burlington, says seven states and over 480 localities prohibit the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. She says she knows of only one pet store in Vermont that occasionally sells cats and dogs.
“We just want to limit the traffic of those stores and puppy mills to come to Vermont. Growing up here, as mentioned, there were more stores. I really saw how the animals were not under the best conditions and quality of life,” Krasnow said.
The bill was introduced in January and remains in the Agriculture, Food Resiliency, and Forestry Committee.
