Slate Ridge owner loses latest Vt. Supreme Court appeal

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The owner of a former West Pawlet paramilitary training camp at the center of a zoning battle with the town has lost another appeal before the Vermont Supreme Court.

The Environmental Court ruled last year that Daniel Banyai was in contempt for failing to remove unpermitted structures from his Slate Ridge property after a years-long legal battle.

Banyai’s lawyer wanted the Vermont Supreme Court to intervene, saying the sanctions imposed on his client were unfair.

But the justices Friday affirmed the ruling, saying the enforcement of it this past summer with an arrest warrant and fines was appropriate.

Banyai was never arrested and it’s unclear where he is.
