Plattsburgh announces eclipse-viewing party at city beach

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – As Northern New York prepares for April’s total solar eclipse, Plattsburgh on Thursday announced an official viewing party at the city beach.

Plattsburgh is along the path of maximum totality for the April 8 eclipse and will be in darkness for a whopping three minutes and 33 seconds.

The city’s director of community development, Courtney Meisenheimer, says the beach event kicks off at noon and will last until 5 p.m. She says there will be live music, food trucks and free parking for visitors.

With the expected influx of eclipse viewers, Meisenheimer says the city has been working with first responders to avoid traffic jams and overflow parking.

She adds that the celestial event is a great opportunity for Plattsburgh to showcase one of its best features.

“I am really hoping that there are a lot of folks that visit the city beach for the first time and then they decide to come back this summer and see it in its kind of full up entirety and that we encourage more people to come and use this amenity,” Meisenheimer said.

North Country officials say eclipse viewers should plan to arrive early and leave late because of the expected traffic.

You can get eclipse-viewing glasses by visiting the North Country Chamber of Commerce.
