Hassan won’t take sides in Dartmouth basketball unionization dispute

LEBANON, Vt. (WCAX) – New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan says all sides need to have their say when it comes to the possibility of the Dartmouth Men’s Basketball Team forming a union.

In early February, the National Labor Relations Board ruled that the team has a right to hold a union vote, which would be unprecedented in college sports.

Players want more say over practice hours and potential wages. But the college is fighting the effort, saying the players are not college employees.

“I generally support efforts to unionize but I do know that there are some unique aspects of this particular case. So, I think it is going to be important for the process to play out here,” Hassan said Wednesday.

The NLRB has given Dartmouth until March 5th to file its appeal. That is the same day players are scheduled to vote on the unionization plan.
