LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (WCAX) – It’s all cool runnings in the Adirondacks as the Jamaican bobsled team kicks off their residency in Saranac Lake.
The residency comes despite Franklin County recently rejecting a deal to use $135,000 to support the team’s stay at the Hotel Saranac as they train at Mt Van Hoevenberg.
But now North Country Sports Council says they will financially support the team without the help of the county. The council’s Matt Dougherty says the athletes’ arrival is already a hit in Saranac Lake. “Tremendous energy., We had a little special meet and greet with the team and I would guess that 1,000 pictures were taken of that bobsled with people in it — very exciting for Saranac Lake,” he said.
Dougherty says they will also look at ways to keep the team in Saranac Lake for longer than six months and that he hopes the county, state, or other organizations will help with funding down the road.
