Lyndonville covered bridge hit by truck again

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. (WCAX) – The Millers Run Covered Bridge in Lyndon has taken another hit.

The nearly 200-year-old bridge was hit by a box truck Thursday morning. Lyndonville police say officers located the vehicle on Lynburke Road near Calendar Brook Road and the driver, Sereign Diop, 23, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, was cited for leaving the scene of an accident. Lyndonville Police Chief Jack Harris says Diop was also fined $10,300 for striking the bridge.

Harris says under a town ordinance that was approved by the Legislature due to the large fine, over-height and overweight vehicles that enter the bridge can face fines of $5,000. In this case, Diop’s truck was both over-height and overweight.

The bridge has been hit by numerous trucks over the years, including at least half a dozen times last year. Town officials last year budgeted up to $30,000 for steel I-beams to protect the bridge.
