Gov. Scott signs off on bill to pay back education fund contributions to flood-affected communities

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Help is on the way for communities that lost housing in the July floods.

The floods ripped through many communities, destroying homes. In Barre, dozens of homes took on significant damage.

Homeowners are eligible for tax abatements, but that means the city is not collecting local and education taxes. A bill signed by Governor Scott would reimburse communities for their contribution to the education fund.

“It’s going to make a huge difference here in Barre City. I’m talking hundreds of thousands of dollars of difference for Barre City,” said Barre City Clerk Carol Dawes.

This is the second bill of the session that the governor has signed.
