Lake Placid officials await Olympic Committee sliding venue decision

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (WCAX) – North Country communities will have to wait a bit longer to see if the sliding portion of the 2026 Olympic Games will be hosted by Lake Placid.

A decision was supposed to be made by the International Olympic Committee or IOC on Wednesday. However, officials in Italy say they are confident they can build a track to host sliding sports in Cortina.

Officials from the Olympic Regional Development Authority say the IOC has pushed back on the European country’s proposal and adds the IOC may be poised to select a backup location if Italy falls short.

“The Olympic Regional Development Authority has since the 1980 games been invested in sports. And so we are active and operational with events and willing and able to step in and help support where needed. And we are still hopeful that the 2026 sliding events, we will be selected to host them,” said Darcy Rowe Norfolk of the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

Organizers in Italy have until March 2025 to have a track ready for Olympic test runs.
