Vt. homeowner shot man allegedly trying to break in, police say

GEORGIA, Vt. (WCAX) – Police say a Georgia, Vermont, homeowner shot and injured a man who was allegedly trying to break into his house.

It happened on Sand Hill Road shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Vermont state police say Gordon Richard, Sr., 75, told investigators that three armed men tried to break into his home through a locked interior door from a separate section of the residence where his son lives. Richard told police he shot one of the men with a muzzleloader, shut the door and called 911.

Troopers found Paul Brown, 39, of Milton and St. Albans, shot and injured in a neighboring yard. He was rushed to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

Police say they’re still investigating and no one has been arrested or faces any charges yet.

Troopers are trying to find Matthew Richard as part of the investigation. Anyone with information on his whereabouts or the case is asked to call the state police in St. Albans at 802-524-5993 or to leave an anonymous tip online.
